PRESS RELEASE 180
José Manuel Albares calls for unity to ensure a greater impact in resolving the crisis in Afghanistan

Minister for Foreign Affairs takes part in first Ministerial Conference

08/09/2021
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Jose Manuel Albares, took part today in the first multilateral coordination meeting on Afghanistan.

Minister Albares stressed that the aim of the international community must be for those people included on the lists of different countries to be able to leave the country quickly and safely, the importance of coordination between partners and allies and the need for humanitarian aid to reach the most vulnerable. The minister underlined that “the more united we are, the more impact we will have”.

According to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, it is also important to maintain a regional approach given that this multisector crisis has potential effects on migration, economics and regional security.

Held in a virtual format, the Conference looked at four points: free movement, cooperation on counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance and diplomatic questions.

The Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the United States, Germany, Australia, Canada, France, India, Italy, Japan, Norway, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, the Secretary-General of NATO and representatives from the European Union and the United Nations took part in the Conference.
