Minister Albares underlines importance of Ibero-American summits as unique mechanism for regional agreement on its 30th anniversary

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, took part today, on Ibero-America Day, in a video call with Ibero-American foreign affairs ministers organised by the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB). This event, entitled “Ibero-America Advances” served to take stock of the 30 years since the creation of the Ibero-American summits in Guadalajara on 19 July 1991. This morning, the minister held a meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia, Carlos Ruiz Massieu.

These two events have taken place following the recent restructuring of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation with the creation of the State Secretariat for Ibero-America and the Caribbean and Spanish around the World.

During the course of the video call, moderated by the Secretary-General of the SEGIB, Rebeca Grynspan, Minister Albares and the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Costa Rica, Portugal and the Dominican Republic had the chance to stress the importance of the Ibero-American summits as a mechanism for agreement and as an exercise in public diplomacy, while reflecting on the future of the summits and the challenges they must address.

During his speech at this forum, the minister highlighted that “one of the priorities of this ministerial department will be Ibero-America. Spain cannot be understood in the world without its Ibero-American soul”, adding that “there is an Ibero-American way to be in the world and those of us who belong to this community are well aware of that”. The Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs also pointed to the shared challenges facing the Ibero-American community. “The challenges are very clear, in the short term it is what we have been suffering from for many months now, which is the fight against the tremendous crisis caused by COVID-19 and rolling out the vaccine, which is the commitment made by President of the Government Sánchez – to help Ibero-America with the vaccine. You can count on Spain to that end”.

Minister José Manuel Albares also referred to the need to achieve the goals of a “green and digital future”: To do so, he specified that the fight against climate change must be fair, without leaving anyone behind. This future also calls for a clear commitment to digitalisation that involves young people through jobs.

In another scheme of things, Minister Albares held a meeting this morning with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, at the headquarters in Santa Cruz, at which they addressed the current state of the peace process in Colombia. The Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Spain’s full commitment to the people and authorities of Colombia in the peace-building process.
