PRESS RELEASE 067
Cristina Gallach visited Venezuela from 28 to 31 March
31/03/2021

The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Cristina Gallach, visited Venezuela from 28 to 31 March. The aims of the trip were to enquire after the humanitarian response to the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular the vaccination plan within the framework of COVAX (Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access), support dialogue among Venezuelans in the search for a political solution to the current situation in the country, and see first-hand the situation of the more than 150,000 Spaniards that are resident in Venezuela, and the Spanish companies that operate there.

At a political level, Cristina Gallach met with government authorities, including the Vice-President, Delcy Rodriguez, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jorge Arreaza. She also held meetings with leaders of the main opposition parties. Spain wishes to have constructive relations with Venezuela and contribute to the resolution of its political crisis, particularly with a view to the upcoming elections to be held in the country. It also wishes to offer solutions to the social, economic and humanitarian crisis, which Cristina Gallach conveyed to all those she held meetings with. In the same tone, the State secretary indicated her wish to see the normalisation of relations with the European Union.

As regards civil society, the State secretary held meetings with representatives of humanitarian NGOs and human rights defenders, and representatives of the Catholic Church, including Cardinal Baltazar Porras and the Papal Nuncio, Aldo Giordani. She also met with leading members of academia and with representatives of the main bodies of the United Nations system that are active in Venezuela. Doctor Julio Castro, a leading epidemiologist, also played a major role in this meeting.

In terms of the Spanish colony, the State secretary held meetings with members of the council of resident Spaniards and with representatives of Spanish centres in Venezuela. Spain is studying additional measures to improve the care conditions for Spanish citizens in vulnerable situations.

At an economic level, interviews were held with the main representatives of Venezuelan businesses and with leading Spanish companies present in Venezuela.
