Spain reaffirms its commitment to gender equality at Mexico Forum

Spain is taking part in the Beijing +25 Generation Equality Forum, starting today and going on until Wednesday in Mexico City, with high-level Spanish representation. In its different sessions, the Forum will include speeches by the First Vice-President of the Government, Carmen Calvo, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Arancha González Laya, the Minister for Equality, Irene Montero and the State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno.

The Generation Equality Forum that begins today in Mexico City will culminate in Paris in June 2021. This is an initiative co-organised by UN Women, Mexico and France, involving the participation of States, civil society organisations, young leaders, foundations and the private sector, committed to making progress on gender equality.

The Forum represents an important turning point for gender equality and the human rights of women and girls, since it promotes a transforming change that speeds up the application of the historic Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The work is structured based on coalitions on the following matters: gender-based violence, economic justice and rights, bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights, climate action, technology and innovation and feminist movements and leadership.

Economic justice and rights
At this Forum, Spain co-heads up the action coalition on economic justice and rights, together with Germany, Sweden and South Africa, the OECD, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the following civil society organisations: Care International, African Women’s Development and Communications Network, Huairou Commission, International Trade Union Confederation and Women’s Working Group on Financing for Development.

This coalition addresses critical questions for the exercise of economic rights by women. At a global level, unremunerated care work performed by women is 2.6 times greater than that performed by men and the rate of participation of women in the job market is 55%, compared with 78% for men.

Employment rights, decent work and access to economic resources under the focus of gender equality must be at the heart of our efforts. It is essential to make progress on the application of public policies that comply with the goals of economic reactivation and the closing of gender gaps in the job market.
The Mexico Forum will highlight the work carried out by the different coalitions and will promote the declaration of specific commitments by different parties to developing gender equality from now until 2025.
