PRESS RELEASE 056
State Secretary Cristina Gallach to begin tour of Central America focused on boosting bilateral relations with the region, regional integration and post-pandemic socio-economic recovery
20/03/2021
The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Cristina Gallach, will undertake a tour of Central America from 21 to 27 March, during which she will visit El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica.

The tour takes place within the context of the commemoration of the bicentenary of the independence of the Central American republics, the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Central American Integration System (Spanish acronym: SICA)  and the 35th anniversary of the start of the Esquipulas Peace Process.

The main aims of the tour are to relaunch high-level trips and in situ contacts that allow bilateral and regional agendas to be resumed, following numerous telematic contacts, in the wake of the shutdown caused by the health crisis stemming from COVID-19. The State secretary will also convey Spain’s priorities for the region, given that Central America is one of the priorities of our foreign policy, and will declare our commitment and interest in accompanying these countries in this year of important commemorations and at a time of serious socio-economic challenges caused by the pandemic and the effects of climate change.

The trip will be divided into three stages: it will begin in El Salvador on 21 and 22 March, continue in Guatemala from 22 to 24 March and end in Costa Rica from 25 to 27 March,

The agenda of the trip includes working meetings with different public authorities, with which she will review the different issues of shared interest, always with a view to fostering sustainable and inclusive development, and with the heads of programmes to commemorate the bicentenary, and with the Secretary-General of SICA, Vinicio Cerezo.

The State secretary is also due to hold meetings with representatives of the different civil societies, and with Spanish business owners, to further understand the reality of each of the countries and encourage Spain’s presence in all spheres.

In the first half of the year, Costa Rica holds the Rotating Presidency of SICA, while Guatemala will take this on in the second half, while El Salvador hosts the Secretariat-General of SICA. This organisation acts as a structuring element of the commemorations at a regional level.
