PRESS RELEASE 052
Spain and Italy launch mechanism to monitor bilateral summits
17/03/2021
The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, met by video-conference with the Secretary-General of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Elisabetta Belloni. This meeting, the first between them, led to the launch of the new monitoring mechanism for Spain-Italy Bilateral Summits and they also addressed several issues on the European agenda.

This meeting is framed within a noteworthy increase in meetings between senior Spanish and Italian public officials, with the Palma Summit as the main milestone, an example of the growing harmony between the two countries.

Juan González-Barba and Elisabetta Belloni exchanged perspectives on the spread of the pandemic. They also addressed, at an EU level, such issues as the Southern Neighbourhood, the Conference on the Future of Europe, the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Pact on Migration and Asylum. In this regard, they both stressed the importance of Spain and Italy coordinating their positions on these dossiers.

This meeting also led to the launch of the new mechanism to monitor the results of the 19th Spain-Italy Summit, held back in November in Palma. Juan González-Barba and Elisabetta Belloni reviewed the main commitments therefrom, and evaluated the progress made. This meeting will be followed by a meeting in person in Madrid, at which they will be accompanied by representatives from the most relevant ministerial departments to develop the commitments taken on at the summit.
