Spanish and German Cooperation coordinate their strategies
In her round of contacts with her European counterparts, the State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau, met by video-conference on Monday with the Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany, Gerd Müller, to address bilateral and European Union (EU) priorities in the field of international development cooperation.

They specifically addressed such issues as migration and development in the Maghreb, the Sahel and West Africa, a key issue for Spain and the EU, along with actions on the Southern Neighbourhood, digitalisation as a driver of growth and the facilitation of vaccines against COVID-19 in developing countries.

The State secretary invited Germany, which plays an ever increasing active role on the African continent, to join up to the “Team Europe” initiative on migration and development, recently launched by Spain to enhance strategic cooperation in the Maghreb, the Sahel and West Africa.

Ángeles Moreno Bau also conveyed Spain’s interest in prioritising the planning of the 10% of the funds under the new European Union Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI) for migratory questions, coordinated through Europe and the Member States. In this context, she stressed the need to guarantee adequate financing for actions related to the different migratory routes, including those of greatest interest for Spain.

At a European level, they discussed cooperation interests in digitalisation for development. Spain and Germany both form part of the group of EU Member States that are working on digital education projects in Africa. The two countries addressed the extension of this line of action to Latin America and the Caribbean.

As regards the fight against COVID-19, they addressed the need to strengthen coordination in the European Union to step up such multilateral initiatives as COVAX, which has now commenced the distribution of vaccines in developing countries, and reiterated the commitment of the two countries to universal and fair access to vaccines.

Ángeles Moreno Bau also declared the importance of enhancing European solidarity for vaccination in Latin America and the Caribbean – a region that accounts for 30% of all the victims of the pandemic.

Lastly, the State secretary and the German minister reviewed the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, and the possibility of holding a new Bilateral Summit and the Spain-Germany Forum this year, without forgetting its cultural component. Spain will be the guest country at the Frankfurt International Book Fair in 2022.
