AECID and RAE promote training grants for Hispanists in countries with Spanish language academies

The State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau, in her condition as President of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID), and the Director of the Spanish Royal Academy (Spanish acronym: RAE) and President of the Association of Spanish Language Academies (Spanish acronym: ASALE), Santiago Muñoz Machado, have signed an agreement on Tuesday to step up the training collaboration grants programme for Hispanists from member countries of ASALE.

The MAEC-AECID training collaboration grants were set up in 2004 as a result of the rise in academic projects in the Spanish language that required common training. At that time, the ties between Hispano-American experts and the academies in their respective countries required a grants system that guaranteed collaboration, leading to the first agreement between AECID and ASALE in 2001, of an indefinite duration, as the appropriate framework to design the grants programme.

In 2001, the Hispanic Lexicography School was also set up along with a network of collaborators at each of the headquarters of the associate academies of the RAE, which allowed the first consolidated grant operational plan to be introduced in 2004.

The current agreement thus updates the 2001 agreement and will help boost pan-Hispanic linguistics policy and the unity of the Spanish language, with grants open in recent years to the United States and the Philippines. This new era is also marked by the digital transformation of the 22 academies in America, the Philippines and Equatorial Guinea, together with the creation of works and projects in a digital format in the fields of Hispanic linguistics, lexicology and philology. Henceforth, these agreements will be renewed on a four-yearly basis.

The training collaboration grants have a one-year duration, which may be extended for a second year, and a monthly allocation of 750 euros. Up to 45 annual grants will be allocated for a maximum sum of 415,000 euros. Since 2004, 524 grants have been allocated to university graduates within the geographic scope of ASALE, preferably specialised at the Hispanic Lexicography School.

State Secretary Ángeles Moreno Bau welcomed “the opportunity to continue working together for the care and advancement of the Spanish language – a heritage that we share” and stressed “the service given to our societies” by the language academies in Ibero-America.

For his part, the President of ASALE and Director of the RAE, Santiago Muñoz Machado, declared his “tremendous satisfaction at the signing of this agreement that allows pan-Hispanic academic work to be maintained while addressing new digital challenges in a collaboration that is key to the unity of our language”.

Spanish Cooperation thus plays its part in external diplomacy to help bed down Spanish as a global language, the second most widely spoken in the world today.
