PRESS RELEASE 025
State Secretary for International Cooperation travels to France to coordinate development and cultural cooperation strategies
12/02/2021
The State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau, finalised her two-day trip to Paris today, to meet with her French counterpart, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, and with the Director-General of the French Development Agency (AFD), Rémy Rioux, with a view to coordinating and sharing development strategies.

She also had a busy cultural cooperation agenda, including a visit to the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in Paris, the presentation of the “Miró Universe” exhibition at the residence of the Spanish Ambassador in Paris and a visit to the Picasso Museum in Paris, where she met with its director, Laurent Le Bon.

At her meeting with the Director-General of the French Development Agency – the equivalent institution to the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID) - they addressed such priority issues as migration and development in the Maghreb, West Africa and the Sahel, the digitalisation of education and the vaccination programme against COVID-19 in developing countries.

The development cooperation of France and Spain is projected in different regions of the world, according to their respective historical ties with certain countries. The Sahel region has taken on increasing significance given the economic and humanitarian crisis affecting the G5 countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger), a situation that led to the creation of the Sahel Coalition in January 2020 as a supportive multilateral response to oversee security, contribute to development and fight terrorism and illegal people trafficking.

Today, Friday, the State Secretary for International Cooperation held a meeting with her French counterpart, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, at which they addressed their respective agendas to explore potential joint actions on development cooperation and culture.

Ángeles Moreno Bau also visited the Cervantes Institute in Paris, an institution that celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, with a further four emblematic centres in Bordeaux (where Goya lives and died), Toulouse (capital of the Republican exiles), Lyon and Paris.

The State secretary also presented the “Miró Universe” exhibition in the Spanish Embassy in Paris, which is touring round European institutions thanks to an agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Miró and Abertis Foundations. Her trip concluded with a visit to the Picasso Museum, where she met with its director, Laurent Le Bon, at which they proposed a joint commemoration in 2023 on the 50th anniversary of the death of the painter from Malaga.
