PRESS RELEASE 017
Spain takes part in 47th plenary session of Committee on World Food Security faced with unprecedented nutritional crisis due to COVID-19
08/02/2021
The State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau, has taken part today in the opening meeting of the 47th plenary session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), being held from 8 to 11 February. The CFS is the United Nations international and intergovernmental platform that seeks to gather support for countries to guarantee food and nutritional security for the world’s population and promote the sustainable development of countries.

For the first time, Spain is a member of the Executive Board for the two-year period 2020-2021, chaired by Tiensin Thanawat from Thailand, and made up of 12 Member States. During this 47th session of the CFS, the Voluntary Guidelines on Food and Nutrition Systems are due to be approved following a complex consultation and negotiation process that began back in September.

These Voluntary Guidelines are geared towards the transformation of food systems, and seek to establish strategic lines on socio-economic sustainability in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

Furthermore, the 2020 Report on Food Security and Nutrition in the world was presented at this session, drawn up by the FAO, IFAD, WFP, UNICEF and WHO, which reflects data that show the growing trend of food insecurity over the last year, due to a great extent to the impact of COVID-19, placing us on the verge of an unprecedented food crisis.

During her speech, Ángeles Moreno Bau claimed that the pandemic we are going through “has highlighted the weaknesses of global food systems and the urgent need to push through a transformation towards sustainable, resilient models inspired by the right to food”. The State Secretary for International Cooperation also declared her support for promoting investments for family agriculture and for women in the rural environment due to their key role in food security.

The State secretary also underlined the support that Spain has shown at the Food Systems Summit, convened by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, for this year, 2021, in order to address the present challenges and the need to consolidate inclusive and sustainable systems to prevent future food and health crises, which are closely related.

Ángeles Moreno Bau also highlighted the importance of the CFS being heavily involved in the preparation of this summit, and of designing a global regulatory response to the impact caused by COVID-19.
