PRESS RELEASE 13
Spain and Greece reaffirm their harmony on bilateral matters and European agenda
02/02/2021
The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, made a working trip to Athens. This is the first official trip by the State secretary abroad in 2021, a sign of the importance our country assigns to Greece, not only at a bilateral level, but also as a European and Mediterranean partner.

Juan González-Barba welcomed the resumption of exploratory talks between Greece and Turkey on 25 January. He reiterated our support and solidarity as a European partner and friend to his Greek opposite numbers, and underlined Spain’s position regarding a lasting and satisfactory solution in the Eastern Mediterranean. This trip will continue with a visit to Cyprus tomorrow.

During his stay in Athens, Juan González-Barba met with the Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs, Miltiades Varvitsiotis, and with the Director of the Diplomatic Office of the Prime Minister, Ambassador Eleni Sourani. At both meetings, they addressed the evolution of the pandemic in our countries and in the EU as a whole, both at a health and an economic level. They discussed the impact on the tourism sector since this has a significant weighting in the GDP of both countries.  His visit also included a meeting with the Deputy Minister for Defence, Alkiviadis Stefanis.

In a joint press briefing with his counterpart, they both highlighted the great harmony and agreement between their two countries on most issues on the agenda.

During his trip, Juan González-Barba reviewed the state of bilateral relations with his opposite numbers. Spain and Greece have strong ties through the EU, but also at an economic and a trade level, enhanced by both being members of the Mediterranean region and the fact that we are both EU border countries.

At his meeting with Alternate Minister Varvitsiotis, they also addressed current affairs on the European agenda, such as the Recovery Plan, the Conference on the Future of Europe, the Pact on Migration, the Western Balkans and the Enlargement of the EU.
