PRESS RELEASE 195
Juan González-Barba stresses importance of shoring up agreement on Recovery Fund as soon as possible during his trip to Hungary
24/11/2020

The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, made a working trip to Hungary at a crucial time in which the European Union must finalise the work leading up to the approval of both the Multiannual Financial Framework and the Economic Recovery Plan to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his stay in Budapest, the State secretary met with the Minister for Justice (with the portfolio for justice, European Union affairs and judicial cooperation at an international and EU level), Judit Varga, and with the State Secretary for European Affairs, Attila Steiner. The State secretary addressed those issues of greatest importance at this time in the European Union with his Hungarian colleagues: the EU Recovery Plan, the rule of law, the Multiannual Financial Framework, the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum, climate change, the enlargement of the EU and the Conference on the Future of Europe. They also discussed future collaboration between the two countries within the framework of the trio of Presidencies of the European Council.

The State secretary also met with the Mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, with whom he discussed, among other matters, the EU’s response to COVID-19 and the role of European cities in tackling the pandemic.

The State secretary stressed the importance of the agreement reached on the Multiannual Financial Framework and the Recovery Plan between the Presidency of the European Council and of the Parliament being formalised and fully applied as soon as possible. The devastating socio-economic effects of the pandemic require urgent action from all Member States and EU institutions, and European citizens expect the EU to rise to the challenge of its responsibilities.
