Spain steps up its support for multilateralism with a package of contributions to United Nations to tackle impact of COVID-19 around the world
The Council of Ministers has today authorised the transfer of a global sum of 19,997,086 euros by way of voluntary contributions primarily for United Nations funds and agencies with the greatest need for resources to tackle the impact of Covid-19 around the world.

This support complements the obligatory annual quotas stemming from Spain’s participation in different international bodies. These voluntary contributions thus allow the government to periodically send available resources to those projects with the largest impact on major global policies, such as health and gender.

The United Nations system is founded as the ideal forum for boosting multilateralism in an increasingly more interconnected world. Such global issues as migration, food security, migratory movements and health are addressed by the different agencies which, thanks to resources provided by States, are able to push through projects with a real impact on people. This cooperation work is strengthened by that of other regional bodies such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

In accordance with its political priorities, Spain regularly makes voluntary contributions to different organisations engaged in the defence and promotion of human rights, particularly gender equality, strengthening peace and international security, the fight against terrorism and international crime, the promotion of sustainable development and disarmament policy, and particularly the elimination of weapons of mass destruction.

Voluntary contributions are, accordingly, an essential tool for this ministerial department, through its State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, to finance those international institutions that are aligned with the values and interests of our foreign policy, which helps position Spain at the heart of these bodies, and promote our political interests and goals.

On this occasion, 39 voluntary contributions have been submitted for the authorisation of the Council of Ministers, for the same number of bodies and programmes. Noteworthy among these are the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), UN Women, the World Health Organization, the UN Programme to fight HIV-AIDS, Malaria and Hepatitis C (UNITAID), the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund, the World Food Programme, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the Technical Cooperation Fund of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
