PRESS RELEASE 212
Queen travels to Honduras to convey solidarity of Spanish people and deliver humanitarian aid
09/12/2020

Her Majesty, Queen Letizia, will make a trip to Honduras to deliver humanitarian aid on 14 and 15 December and to see first-hand the situation in the country following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Eta and Iota, while conveying the solidarity of the Spanish people at this difficult time. The Queen will be accompanied by the State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau.

During her visit, she will hand over a large volume of humanitarian aid – the largest assignment from Spanish Cooperation in the last ten years, amounting to more than 120 tonnes that will be distributed among the Honduran people. Part of the shipment will be transported on Queen Letizia’s flight and will include, among other items, rapid COVID-19 diagnostic tests.

The Queen’s agenda in Honduras is subject to mobility conditions in the country, although in principle a meeting has been scheduled with the Honduran authorities at the highest level, together with visits to a school and a hostel in affected areas in Sula Valley, as well as meetings with senior officials from Spanish Cooperation and NGOs in Honduras, to whom she will pass on her recognition for their work supporting the people affected.

This trip to deliver humanitarian aid seeks to value the support offered by Spain and will be the prelude to a long-term recovery and reconstruction plan that goes beyond mere emergency aid. The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID) will implement the pilot project e-Duc@ in the field of digital education, a pioneering experience for social development by Spanish Cooperation.

This visit by the Queen also seeks to contribute to raising awareness and mobilising the whole international community on the seriousness of the situation and the need to step up efforts in such critical areas as education, health and climate change.

The climate catastrophe cause by Hurricanes Eta and Iota, which has affected 40% of the population and left half a million people homeless, 100,000 people crowded into hostels, half the students without an Internet connection, 100 people dead, 330,000 people cut off and the country’s economic hub - San Pedro Sula – devastated, comes on top of the impact of the pandemic in Honduras.
