PRESS RELEASE 185
Spain contributes 17 million euros to alleviate migratory crisis and humanitarian needs of Venezuelan people
17/11/2020

The Council of Ministers has today approved a range of voluntary contributions amounting to a total of 17 million euros to international bodies, designed to alleviate the humanitarian crisis of displaced Venezuelans, as well as the impact on the communities in host countries.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Inter-American Development bank (IDB) will work with Spanish financing to provide basic assistance to displaced persons, strengthen the capacities of host communities, and contribute to protecting the most vulnerable.

Spain, through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID), will contribute 5 million euros to the IOM, the same amount to the IDB and 7 million euros to UNHCR.

From 2017 to 2019, Spanish Cooperation contributed 20 million euros in response to this humanitarian crisis, both in the region and within Venezuela itself. In 2019, 42% of the humanitarian funds from AECID were allocated to the Venezuelan crisis, the second most serious displacement of people in the world, behind only the crisis in Syria, which has led to the exile of 5.5 million Venezuelans, with 85% of these remaining in the region.

Attending to the Venezuelan migratory crisis is a priority issue for Spain, to which end, at the “International Donors Conference in Solidarity with Venezuelan Migrants and Refugees within the Context of COVID-19”, held in May of this year, 50 million euros were committed between 2020 and 2022. During the conference, a record 2.51 billion euros were raised.

According to the figures from October 2020 of the Coordination Platform for Venezuelan Refugees and Migrants, there are 4.6 million Venezuelan migrants and refugees in Latin America and the Caribbean. Of these, 1,764,883 are in Colombia, 1,043,460 in Peru and 417,199 in Ecuador. It is expected that the total number of displaced persons could rise to 6.5 million by the end of the year.

Among the initiatives planned by these three international bodies, the strengthening of national asylum systems, free legal aid, support for unaccompanied minors, socio-economic inclusion, healthcare measures and the strengthening of public health systems, regional mapping of the situation, the fight against discrimination and financial operations for development projects all stand out.
