Joint press release on 7th Meeting of Peru-Spain Political Consultations Mechanism

Today, on 4 November 2020, the 7th Meeting of the Peru-Spain Political Consultations Mechanism was held by video-conference. The Peruvian delegation was headed up by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Manuel Gerardo Talavera Espinar and the Spanish delegation by the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Ibero-American and the Caribbean, Cristina Gallach Figueras.

The two State secretaries observed at the meeting the excellent state of bilateral ties in different areas (political, economic, cooperation, consular and cultural) within the framework of the “strengthened strategic association” and reaffirmed their will to continue strengthening them with a view to the bi-centenary of Peru, an event that both countries will commemorate jointly. They also praised the contribution and dynamism of the large Peruvian community in Spain and the Spanish community in Peru, which contribute to enhancing the historical relations between the two countries.

Embracing this spirit, they agreed to enrich the bilateral legal acquis by signing a new generation framework agreement that spans the whole bilateral relation. Similarly, as a continuation of the Joint Peru-Spain Declaration of February 2019, they agreed to push through specific agreements on culture, education, science, technology and investments, along with other areas.

The two State secretaries reviewed the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in both countries and underlined the close bilateral cooperation since the outbreak. They agreed to continue collaborating on stepping up capacities in response to COVID-19 and to guarantee that vaccines should be considered as a universal public asset.

The two delegations also analysed the international situation, with particular emphasis on its Ibero-American scope, with a view to the upcoming Summit in Andorra. As regards Venezuela, they agreed on the need to continue promoting international agreement in the search for a peaceful solution headed up by the people of Venezuela to the multidimensional crisis through democratic presidential and legislative elections. They also reiterated the importance of continuing to raise awareness by the international community to the urgency of mobilising resources to help the people of Venezuela who are displaced and the host communities in the recipient countries in the region.

They highlighted the broad agreement at a multilateral level, their firm commitment to the 2030 Agenda and to the Sustainable Development Goals, which constitute a forum for dialogue and cooperation between the two countries, at a bilateral level, and also at an Ibero-American and multilateral level, as well as the promotion of such shared values as the defence of democracy and the rule of law, full respect for human rights, gender equality, free trade and the fight against corruption.
