PRESS RELEASE 170
State Secretary for European Union travels to Romania to step up coordination in EU
30/10/2020

The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, concluded his working trip to Romania today. Spain and Romania share tremendously close ties, principally marked by two realities: our common membership of the European Union and the ties between our two peoples as a result of the presence in Spain of a large number of Romanian citizens, one of the largest foreign communities in Spain.

During his stay in Bucharest, Juan González-Barba met with his Romanian counterpart, the State Secretary for the EU, Iulia Matei. They addressed both aspects of bilateral relations and the European Union. At a bilateral level, they discussed the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic in the two countries, along with future visits and the possible holding of the 1st Bilateral Spain-Romania Summit in 2021. This Summit would mark the launch of a Strategic Partnership between the two countries, which provides for the increased frequency of high-level meetings. The State secretary also enquired after bilateral trade relations and underlined the exemplary integration of the extensive Romanian community in Spain.

As regards EU matters, they discussed converging their positions on such important matters as the EU Recovery Plan, the Multiannual Financial Framework, future relations between the EU and the United Kingdom, migration and asylum policy, the Western Balkans and the enlargement of the EU, the rule of law, and the Conference on the Future of Europe.

The State secretary also met with Leonard Orban, European Affairs Adviser to the President of Romania, a member of the negotiating team for the adhesion of Romania to the EU and the country’s first European commissioner.
