PRESS RELEASE 168
State Secretary for European Union travels to Austria to coordinate European response to pandemic
28/10/2020

The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, concluded his working trip to Austria today.

This visit takes place at a decisive time for the European Union with the escalation of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. It is key for Member States to make an effort to converge positions on issues that will condition a successful future for the EU. Through fluid dialogue over the course of the pandemic, Austria and Spain seek to generate a forum for consensus on different European issues. The State secretary took the opportunity to reiterate to his counterparts a message of collaboration on the part of the Government of Spain.

During his time in Vienna, the State secretary met with his counterpart, the Federal Minister for the EU and the Constitution, Karoline Edtstadler, who visited Spain back in February. The State secretary addressed the situation of the COVID-19 epidemic and other important matters relating to the European Union with Minister Edtstadler, such as the EU Recovery Plan, future relations between the EU and the United Kingdom, the Multiannual Financial Framework, the new Pact on Migration and Asylum, the enlargement of the EU, rule of law mechanisms and the Conference on the Future of Europe, among others.

Spain considers it a priority for Europe to provide a response to the economic crisis triggered by the pandemic as soon as possible and calls on EU institutions and Member States to put their differences to one side to provide speedy responses to the demands of European citizens.

During his visit, the State secretary also met with the Secretary-General of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Ambassador Peter Launsky, with whom he reviewed the main areas of bilateral relations, future high-level visits and bilateral economic relations. Austria’s great interest in Spanish culture and artists should particularly be noted, the effect of which has increased in number in recent years, together with the good health of the Spanish language, with our new Cervantes Institute in Vienna which bears testimony of this growing interest by the Austrian people.
