Juan González-Barba travels to Andalusia to strengthen dialogue with the region on European affairs

The State Secretary for European Affairs, Juan González-Barba, concluded a working trip to Andalusia yesterday aimed at discussing European current affairs having an impact on the region with the Regional Government of Andalusia, other bodies and relevant stakeholders, as well as to hear first-hand the concerns being expressed in the region with regard to European affairs.

Yesterday, the State Secretary met with the Andalusian Councillors for the Presidency, Public Administration and Internal Affairs, Elías Bendodo; for the Treasury and European Financing, Juan Bravo; for Agriculture, Farming, Fishing and Sustainable Development, Carmen Crespo; and the Secretary-General for External Action, Enric Millo. The meeting was used to discuss European Union affairs of significance to Andalusia, such as the EU Recovery Plan, the coordination of travel restriction measures by EU Member States, the European Commission proposal for a new Migration and Asylum Pact, the Common Agricultural Policy reform, involvement by Andalusia in cross-border cooperation programmes in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, and the status of talks between the EU and the United Kingdom.

Juan González-Barba previously attended a meeting with the Mayor of Seville, Juan Espadas. Juan Espadas is a member of the European Committee of the Regions and President of its Environment, Climate Change and Energy Committee. The work done by the Committee of the Regions was discussed at this meeting, in particular the EU Urban Agenda and the role of cities in the European Green Deal and Recovery Plan.

The State Secretary also visited the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Seville, the only Directorate-General of the European Commission with its headquarters in Spain. The centre provides scientific basis to the entire cycle of European politics, especially in terms of the ecological transition, the digital transformation and a people-focused economic development model. The numerous issues discussed by the State Secretary with the team at this centre included the circular economy, climate change, green taxonomy, artificial intelligence, mobility, online education, teleworking and knowledge management.

State Secretary Juan González-Barba also attended a face-to-face and online meeting at the Confederation of Andalusian Business Owners, at which he exchanged points of view and expectations with business leaders on the European Recovery Fund and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, as well as the talks on an agreement to govern the future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union and its implications for the various business sectors in the region.
On the previous day, the State Secretary attended an event organised by the Faculty of Law at the University of Seville, coinciding with the start of the academic year. He gave a talk and spoke with professors and students in the International Public Law Department about the European Union. The discussions highlighted the fundamental role played by the European Union in progress towards not only a swift recovery from the crisis but also towards a green, digital and inclusive socio-economic transformation, as well as on strengthening international cooperation.
