PRESS RELEASE 160
Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation visits Lebanon
16/10/2020
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Arancha González Laya, visited Lebanon today, in a continuation of her tour of the Middle East. There she held meetings with the country’s main authorities – the President of the Republic, the Speaker of Parliament and the Prime Minister, and with her counterpart, with whom she held consultations, as well as with other ministers.

At her meetings, the minister reiterated her condolences over the victims of the explosion in Beirut on 4 August and expressed her ongoing commitment to the country’s security. Spain has contributed to UNIFIL with 600 servicemen since 2006 – the peacekeeping mission deployed in southern Lebanon.

Arancha González Laya congratulated the Lebanese authorities on their talks with Israel, facilitated by the United States, with the collaboration of the United Nations, on the limits of their maritime waters pursuant to international law. They also addressed the generous welcome given by Lebanon to Syrian refugees. Spain provides humanitarian aid to contribute to this effort.

The minister visited the site for the modular school complex that will take in more than 500 pupils, to which end Spanish Cooperation will help rebuild a school in the area affected by the explosion. She also took the opportunity to witness the works to clear away rubble in the port, being undertaken by UNIFIL, together with a representative of the Lebanese Army and to visit General Fernández Hererro, Head of the Eastern Sector of UNIFIL and of the Spanish contingent.

During her visit, Arancha González Laya also held a meeting with female leaders of civil society, to whom she conveyed her vision of the challenges facing the country.
