PRESS RELEASE 146
Minister González Laya travels to Jordan
02/10/2020
After finishing her tour of the Maghreb region, the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, travelled to Jordan on 30 September. This is her first visit to the Middle East, where Jordan plays a key role in stability and moderation for the region.

While speaking to her counterpart, Ayman Safadi, the two ministers discussed bilateral relations and regional affairs, including the still pending solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Syria and Iraq, also neighbours of Jordan.

They also spoke about the upcoming celebration on 27 November in Spain of the 25th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, which gathered all European countries and those on the southern shores of the Mediterranean for the first time, as well as a meeting the previous day between the EU and the Southern Neighbourhood countries.

The Spanish minister also met with the Political and Parliamentary Affairs Minister and the International Planning and Cooperation Minister, with whom she signed the first Country Partnership Framework 2020-2024 to make 50 million euros available to Jordan via donations and financial aid. The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID) will also make use of 25 million in aid from the EU, especially on health programmes.

To witness first-hand the generous welcome given by Jordan to refugees, the Spanish minister visited the UNRWA and UNHCR facilities that support Palestinian and Syrian refugees, respectively, and where enormous humanitarian efforts are being made.

She also attended meetings with civil society and visited the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in Amman.
