PRESS RELEASE 145
State Secretary for European Union reiterates Spain’s support for German Presidency of EU during his trip to Berlin
01/10/2020

The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, made a working trip to Germany within the framework of the German Rotating Presidency of the European Union. Germany holds this Presidency in the second half of the year, with the slogan “United for the recovery of Europe”. This working trip allowed the two countries to review the main issues on the bilateral and European agendas.

During his stay in Berlin, the State secretary met with his German counterparts – the Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth, and State Secretary, Miguel Berger. He also held meetings with the President of the European Affairs Committee in the National Parliament, Gunther Krichbaum, with the MP and Head of European Affairs of the Green Party, Franziska Brantner, and with the MP and former President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz.

This visit allowed the State secretary to further develop the already extensive bilateral relations with Germany, which have been framed since 2018 in a structured dialogue that has seen an increase in both the number and frequency of meetings between the two countries at different levels.

The State secretary also addressed to those taking part the response from the two countries and from the EU as a whole to the pandemic, as well as many important aspects on European matters: the Next Generation EU Recovery Plan, Brexit, the Multiannual Financial Framework, the Migratory and Asylum Plan, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Western Balkans, and the Conference on the Future of Europe, among others.

The State secretary took the opportunity to reiterate Spain’s support for Germany’s work as holder of the Rotating Presidency of the EU Council. The priorities of the German Presidency are fully shared by the Government of Spain and coordination on numerous dossiers has been very fruitful. The two countries share a great pro-European conviction and the need to continue making progress jointly on the integration process to tackle the common challenges that the EU is facing. To achieve this, they seek an exit from the crisis and economic recovery that is committed to the ecological and digital transition, as well as to inclusion, so as to leave no-one behind.
