Spanish-mexican film ‘Sin señas particulares’ wins 6th Spanish cooperation Prize at San Sebastián International Film Festival
The film ‘Sin señas particulares’, by the Mexican director Fernanda Valadez, won the 6th Spanish Cooperation Prize tonight at the 68th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival. The award was presented on Saturday by the State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau, during the closing ceremony of the event, held at the Kursaal auditorium. The Spanish Cooperation Prize, bestowed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID), attached to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, has now been awarded for six straight years with the aim of strengthening the Ibero-American audio-visual industry.

‘Sin señas particulares’, a Spanish-Mexican production, which competed in the category Latin Horizons, addresses the drama of immigration in the United States from the perspective of a mother – Magdalena – who sets off to search for her missing son near the border between Mexico and the United States, littered with victims and aggressors. “Culture is a hallmark of Spanish cooperation, because there can be no development without culture. Cinema, music, art and theatre play a key role in the fight against poverty, exclusion, inequalities and the design of inclusive cities, to name but a few lines of work”, argued Ángeles Moreno Bau before presenting the award.

The Spanish Cooperation Prize has been presented since the year 2015 to an Ibero-American film in the categories of Official Section, New Directors or Latin Horizons, which contributes to development, the eradication of poverty and the full exercise of human rights. Its aim is to boost new Ibero-American talent, encourage the production of cinema projects, spread the values of cooperation and strengthen the distribution and internationalisation of films.

“Latin America and the Caribbean is a priority region for Spanish cooperation. We are well aware of its needs and also of the importance of supporting the Ibero-American cultural sector following the positive results obtained from different experiences”, remarked the State secretary.

The jury for this prize was chaired by Lucía Chicote, Head of the Cooperation Department with Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean of the AECID. Fernando San Martín, Director-General of International Cooperation at the Department of Culture, International Cooperation, Youth and Sport of the Provincial Council of Guipuzcoa, and Cristina Ubani, advisor on equality and development cooperation projects at public and private entities, completed the jury. At its sixth edition, this prize is accompanied by a cash award of 10,000 euros.

The film by Fernanda Valadez (Guanajuato, Mexico, 1981) competed against four others: ‘Nosotros nunca moriremos’ (Argentina), by Eduardo Crespo, the story of a duel in the province of Argentina; ‘La última primavera’ (Holland-Spain), by Isabel Lamberti, which portrays Cañada Real – a neighbourhood with low-class housing on the outskirts of Madrid; ‘Visión nocturna’ (Chile), by Carolina Moscoso, which traces the reconstruction of a rape eight years on; and ‘Todos os mortos’ (Brazil-France), by Caetano Gotardo and Marco Dutra, which goes back to the end of the 19th Century, a few years after the abolition of slavery in Brazil.
