Spain sends second package of humanitarian aid to Lebanon

The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID) has made a second shipment of humanitarian aid through the Humanitarian Aid Office (Spanish acronym: OAH) to Lebanon following the explosion on 4 August in Beirut. The tragedy left almost 200 people dead, thousands of people injured and hundreds of thousands homeless. Since the disaster, Spain has allocated a total of 300,000 euros in humanitarian aid to Lebanon.

The second shipment consisted of personal protective equipment (PPE) for rubble removal and family hygiene kits that were requested by the NGO Cáritas Líbano. The shipment, made up of 11 pallets of 2.2 tonnes of weight, was transported on a European Union Humanitarian Air Bridge (EU HAB) flight enabled by the European Commission to provide assistance to areas in a critical situation during the COVID-19 pandemic, together with provisions from other Member States.

The first shipment to Lebanon from Spain took place on 11 August in a Spanish Air Force plane, and included 10 tonnes of wheat, made available by the Olof Palme International Foundation, with the aim of alleviating the lack of supply caused by the explosion, which destroyed part of the country’s reserve.

Previously, AECID had activated an emergency agreement with the Spanish Red Cross to support the response plan organised on the ground by the Lebanese Red Cross – the humanitarian organisation that is providing urgent primary care to the thousands of people affected by the explosion. The activation has an initially planned duration of four and a half months until the end of 2020.

Thanks also to the activation of this agreement, the Spanish Red Cross was able to send 96 cases of medicines and healthcare material last week, which will be distributed by the Lebanese Red Cross.

Furthermore, AECID responded to the call from the International Federation of the Red Cross with the aim of strengthening the pre-hospital services, first aid and blood transfusions, as well as catering for the basic needs of the worst affected communities.

On 19 August, AECID activated a second emergency agreement for Lebanon, this time with the NGO Plan International, for the shipment of hygiene kits to 1,200 families and the provision of psychosocial first aid to 750 boys and girls.

Spain thus signs up to the contributions from the European Union and other countries to Lebanon given the scale of a crisis that exacerbates the country’s problems, and will remain on standby for new international calls that may be made.
