Magdy Esteban Martínez Solimán, United Nations expert in development policies, appointed as new Director of AECID

​The Governing Council of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Spanish acronym: AECID) appointed Magdy Esteban Martínez Solimán (Madrid, 1961) on Tuesday as the institution’s new director, a post he will take on as from 1 September and which means his return to Spain after 22 years overseas.

Magdy Esteban Martínez Solimán graduated in law in 1984 from Malaga University and is a United Nations civil servant, the international body where he has worked for the last two decades in development, peace and security policies. His most recent posting was to Barbados as the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the East Caribbean region.

Educated as a child in an international context in Vienna, Brussels and Madrid, the new Director of AECID speaks English, French, German and Spanish.

From 1988 to 1998, Magdy Esteban Martínez Solimán worked as the Director-General for Youth at the Ministry of Social Affairs, as Deputy Councillor for the Presidency of the Regional Government of Andalusia and as a local councillor for the City Council of Malaga. He also worked for three years as an assistant law lecturer at Malaga University.

In 1998, he began his international career as an international parliamentary expert for the Asia-Pacific region in Bangladesh, and since 2001 he has been involved in United Nations development policies in different countries.

Magdy Esteban Martínez Solimán worked in Senegal as a UNDP adviser in institutional reforms for Africa (2001-2003), on democratic governability for the UNDP in New York (2003-2006) and was Executive Director of the United Nations Democracy Fund at the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, in Nueva York (2006-2007).

From 2007 to 2012, he worked as the United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Mexico.

From 2012 to 2014, he was Deputy Director of the Bureau for the UNDP Program and Policy Support in New York, where he was appointed as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations by Ban Ki-Moon from 2014 to 2017. HIs most recent postings were as the UNDP Resident Representative in Trinidad and Tobago and in Barbados.

Magdy Esteban Martínez Solimán is very familiar with the multilateral and bilateral development cooperation system, and has a global vision of general and technical-administrative affairs and of the reality and specific needs of developing countries.
