PRESS RELEASE 121
State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Cristina Gallach, holds meeting with Greek Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, on Greek Presidency of Council of Europe
22/07/2020

The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Cristina Gallach, has held a meeting today by video-conference with the Greek Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, to address the priorities and programme of the current Greek Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Greek has been exercising this presidency since the month of May. It will culminate with the ministerial meeting in Athens on 4 November, at which the 47 Member States of the Council of Europe are due to participate. Within the framework of the ministerial meeting, the 70th anniversary of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedom will be commemorated.

Miltiadis Varsitsiontis explained the priorities for the period, which include the protection of human life and public health, the compatibility of states of emergency with respect for human rights, the rule of law and democracy, the protection of children and young people in the spheres of digital education, and democratic citizenship, and the protection of unaccompanied minors at risk of poverty and victims of violence and forced labour.

They agreed that the situation created by the pandemic must provide an opportunity to strengthen human rights, democracy and the rule of law, and the protection of the most vulnerable, rather than the opposite.

They underlined the good bilateral relations between Spain and Greece, which are also reflected in the framework of the Council of Europe.

State Secretary Gallach offered Spain’s collaboration in contributing to the success of the Greek presidency and offered our country’s experience on the Council of Europe, an organisation that Spain is very familiar with and presided in 2008, and with which it maintains a firm commitment as a benchmark international organisation on our continent in defending human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
