PRESS RELEASE 120
Bilateral political consultations between Spain and India
21/07/2020

The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Cristina Gallach, and the Secretary (West) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India, Vikas Swarup, today held the sixth round of bilateral political consultations between Spain and India. They addressed the main aspects of bilateral relations, and issues of common interest on the international agenda. The State secretary highlighted the importance of the recent EU agreement on the Multiannual Financial Framework in the context of the economic recovery and the importance of a cohesive EU for our international partners in order to give a common boost to the global economy.

They both agreed on the excellent state of bilateral relations, with five rounds of high-level contacts since 2018, and two more during the global pandemic, in which there has been a good level of collaboration. They reviewed the progress made in negotiations on 10 agreements on which the two countries are working in such diverse fields as water management, sustainable development, astrophysics and sport.

They also addressed multilateral questions. Both Spain and India are firm proponents of effective multilateralism, and both parties stressed the importance of strengthening the global health system, and of reflecting on the lessons learned from the international response to COVID-19 with a strengthened WHO at its centre. In addition, both countries have similar outlooks on democracy, human rights and the fight against climate change.

At an economic level, State Secretary Gallach and Secretary Swarup highlighted the potential of our relations and the importance of pushing through work within the framework of the High-Level Dialogue created by the EU-India Summit held on 15 July, to enhance negotiations on investment and trade. Bilateral trade relations exceeded 5.5 billion euros in 2019, placing Spain as the sixth largest trading partner of India in the EU. They discussed economic cooperation opportunities between Spain and India on the matters of connectivity, railways, public works and infrastructures, on promoting sustainable urban development and tourism.

As regards education, they highlighted their mutual interest of why Indian students may consider Spain as a destination to take international studies, welcoming potential interuniversity agreements.
