44th session of Human Rights Council concludes

The 44th session of the Human Rights Council has concluded today, at which Spain has participated as a member for the period 2018-2020.

Within the framework of this session, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation took part in the annual high-level debate on women and COVID-19, at which she stressed the importance of the rights of women and girls playing a central role in the response to and recovery from COVID-19, and the leadership role of the High Commissioner and the Human Rights Council.

The 44th session of the Human Rights Council welcomed the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review Report of Spain, highlighting the acceptance by our country of 91% of the recommendations on human rights, something which most of the participants at the adoption session underlined. Spain highly rates the Universal Periodic Review as an exercise in transparency, reflection and to raise awareness, which serves as a guide for States to implement human rights, and as a genuinely universal instrument whereby all States in the international community periodically present their human rights situation and receive the recommendations of other countries.

This Council meeting focused, among other thematic issues, on the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the elimination of female genital mutilation; the fight against human trafficking, particularly of women and girls; the rights of people with disabilities; human rights and climate change; the freedom of expression; the role of civil society organisations; the independence of judges and lawyers; the rights of migrants; companies and human rights; the responsibility to protect; the protection of human rights in the context of peaceful demonstrations; and the contribution of human rights to the aims and objectives of the United Nations Charter.

Spain has taken part in different interactive dialogues in relation to the human rights situation in Venezuela, Eritrea, Burundi, Syria, the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Myanmar; it also took part in thematic dialogue on sexual orientation and gender identity, the elimination of violence against children and the consequences of armed conflicts on children, extreme poverty and human rights, companies and human rights and human rights in the context of peaceful demonstrations. Spain also supported the resolutions on the human rights situation in Eritrea, Syria and Belarus, which were adopted at this Council session.
