PRESS RELEASE 099
Ministers for Foreign Affairs and for Trade reaffirm government’s aim of strengthening Spain’s presence in Africa
26/06/2020
The Ministers for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Arancha González Laya, and for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, have taken part today in a meeting by video-conference with representatives of Spanish companies with interests in Africa so as to inform them of the government’s initiatives to increase economic exchanges and strengthen their presence on the continent.

Arancha González Laya opened the meeting, stating that “Africa is a priority for the Government of Spain. We want to translate the African priority into specific actions, in a joint effort from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and of Trade to build long-term opportunities for Spanish companies and for economic growth on the continent. The introduction of the African Free Trade Zone – the largest on the planet – and the upcoming EU-Africa Summit, offer opportunities we want to work on”.

Reyes Maroto outlined the main strands of “Horizon Africa” – a trade and financial strategy to support the internationalisation of Spanish companies in the African market and to promote a sound and growing Spanish presence on the continent. “The strategy includes public support measures with two cornerstones - institutional and financial - through which we want to contribute to increasing and strengthening the competitiveness of exports and investments”.

The meeting allowed work to be done on institutional presence, financing instruments, mobility and legal certainty instruments on the continent. Representatives from TSK, AEE Power, Caixabank, FCC Aqualiad, Consultrans, Acciona, Abengoa, Indra and Rufepa took part in the meeting.
