Spain takes part in Conference of Donors of UNRWA
The Ministers for Foreign Affairs of Jordan and for Development of Sweden today chaired the Conference of Donors of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), held by video-conference.

The meeting was used to analyse the delicate moment for UNRWA due to the impact of COVID-19 on the chronic health crisis situation of Palestine refugees, and due to the political tension stemming from the potential annexing of parts of the West Bank by Israel and from the budgetary difficulties following the withdrawal of the United States as a donor in 2018.

UNRWA was set up in 1949 under the mandate of the General Assembly of the United Nations to offer emergency aid and social care programmes to the refugee Palestine population.

After more than 70 years, UNRWA’s current mission is to offer help and protection to the 5.6 million Palestine refugees that live in 58 camps in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine, awaiting a solution to their status.

Originally conceived as a temporary organisation, UNRWA has adapted its programmes to cover the shifting needs of refugees over recent decades. At present, UNRWA runs more than 700 schools, helping half a million pupils throughout the Near East.

The Agency also provides healthcare at 143 primary health centres and runs 49 health and training centres for women, as well as a similar number of community centres. UNRWA’s current mandate has been renewed until 2023.
The State Secretary for International Cooperation, Ángeles Moreno Bau, took part on behalf of Spain, who underlined the vital role that UNRWA plays in providing care and protection for the refugee population. This conference coincides with her virtual trip to Palestine this week.

During her speech, Ángeles Moreno Bau recalled Spain’s commitment to achieving a fair and lasting peace to the conflict between Israel and Palestine, with full respect for international law, in the conviction that there is no alternative to a two-State solution with Jerusalem as the capital of both.

Spain is one of the historically most committed donors to UNRWA and is among the 20 leading donors in the world.
