PRESS RELEASE 093
43rd session of Human Rights Council concludes
23/06/2020
The 43rd session of the Human Rights Council concluded today in Geneva, the seventh in which Spain has participated as a member of this Council for the period 2018-2020. This session began in February but was postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, with meetings resuming last week.

In line with the priority status that the defence and promotion of human rights plays in Spanish foreign policy, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, took part on 24 February in the High-Level Segment of this first annual session of the Council. In her speech, the minister underlined that, in this year in which we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, multilateralism is the best channel for achieving the shared goals and the only way to protect ourselves from common threats. She also stated that the Council must not only serve to report and bring an end to human rights violations, but must also prevent them, by enhancing cooperation and ensuring assistance from States in complying with the commitments taken on.

At this 43rd session, the European Union has presented several initiatives relating to the freedom of religion and belief, the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and in Myanmar.

Spain has also taken part in the debates and negotiations on different resolutions on such diverse issues as the protection of human rights defenders, the rights of persons with disabilities, economic, social and cultural rights, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Among the new features of this session, worthy of mention is the adoption of a declaration on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on human rights and also the holding of an urgent debate on racism, police brutality and the right to peaceful demonstration, followed by the approval by consensus of a resolution on the same issue presented by the African Group.

Lastly, the Council reviewed and adopted resolutions on the human rights situation in Nicaragua, Syria, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Myanmar, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Iran, South Sudan, Mali, Libya and Georgia.
