PRESS RELEASE 089
Ministry of Foreign Affairs receives 800 enquiries on business trips abroad in first week of ‘Conecta International Mobility’
14/06/2020

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation has received some 800 enquiries regarding trips abroad for business or professional reasons in the first week of operation of the service ‘Conecta International Mobility’.

In just five days, this public helpline service that seeks to facilitate international travel for all business owners, workers, professionals and technicians that need to go on international trips despite the severe restrictions stemming from COVID-19, has received close to 700 phone calls and has responded to more than 100 emails. On Friday alone, 170 calls were registered.

These figures have forced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation to strengthen the service with more volunteers from the public authorities to answer the calls to the number 060 (or to +34 911252122 from abroad) from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 2 pm, and to the email address conecta@maec.es .

50% of the enquiries received related to travel abroad, and the other half to enquiries regarding entry to Spain and staying here. Most of the enquiries relate to the end of restrictions on entry in third countries, the current requirements, the final date of the state of emergency in Spain, the need to go into quarantine when arriving in Spain, essential activities, arriving with one’s spouse and children to Spanish territory, among others.

The predominant profile of those enquiring after this kind of information is small- and medium-sized Spanish enterprises that wish to send staff for business trips or for technical work abroad, companies from peer countries whose executives or technical staff wish to travel to Spain at this time, and those from the liberal professions and students that need to make short trips abroad.

The largest numbers of calls fielded in this first week of operation have been from France, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Morocco, China, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The information facilitated is revised each day with the content provided, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, and the competent departments of the Ministries of Health, of Home Affairs and of Trade.

This new tool, which will be available while travel restrictions persist, seeks to cover a demand that was being detected by different public departments, and will also allow for the identification, with greater precisions, of those countries in which there is a greater lack of information for these groups that need to travel despite the severe restrictions imposed due to COVID-19.

After analysing this information, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, together with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, will have sufficient knowledge to reinforce the information channels through Spanish’s embassies and consulates abroad, as well as through the network of State trade offices, should this prove necessary.

In 2019, some 4.5 million people travelled from Spain for work related reasons while 5.4 million travelled to our country for similar motives. Spain has some 6,000 subsidiaries of Spanish companies with business interests overseas that provide jobs to close on 800,000 people and generate annual turnover of some 200 billion euros. Most of this in concentrated in the Americas (404,000 people), Europe (273,000 people) and Asia (60,000 people).

Spain is the second largest exporter from the European Union, behind only Germany. The export of goods and services accounts for 34.7% of GDP, placing us as the 11th ranked country in the world in terms of the export of services, and the 16th largest global exporter of goods.
