PRESS RELEASE 068
Recovery Plan, de-escalation strategy and Conference on Future of Europe among issues debated today by State Secretary for EU and his Czech counterpart
07/05/2020

The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, has held a meeting today, on 7 May 2020, by video-conference with the Czech Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Aleš Chmelař, to address the main aspects of the European response to the COVID-19 crisis, as well as others issues such as the enlargement of the EU, and the Conference on the Future of Europe. The State Secretary for the European Union stated that “Spain heads up the efforts to achieve a European consensus in response to COVID-19. We need a coordinated European recovery that leaves no-one behind”.

The State secretary and his Czech counterpart addressed the need for a coordinated de-escalation strategy, particularly in such fields as tourism and transport, which does not discriminate between Member States. Spain also agrees with the Czech Republic on the need to advocate an ambitious Multiannual Financial Framework to ensure a real impact on the recovery of European economies.

Acknowledging the importance of a recovery that reaches everyone, Spain and the Czech Republic addressed the need to maintain the unity of the internal market, to which end such aspects as a framework for fair State aid and safeguarding the Cohesion Funds will be essential.

The Czech Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs also enquired after the Spanish proposal to extend the scope of the Conference on the Future of Europe to address the geopolitical challenges that will face the European Union in a post-COVID-19 global environment.
