PRESS RELEASE 066
Spain, Germany, France and Italy address crisis response and agree to promote European coordination of exit strategies
04/05/2020

The State Secretary for the European Union, Juan González-Barba, held a meeting by video-conference today with his counterparts from France, Amélie de Montchalin, from Germany, Michael Roth, and from Italy, Enzo Amendola.

The meeting was held following the video-conference of Heads of State and Government of the European Union on 23 April and of Foreign Affairs Ministers on 22 April, with the aim of providing continuity to the efforts to coordinate exit strategies to the health crisis and to prepare measures for economic recovery to be adopted within the framework of the EU.

The representatives of the four highest populated countries in the EU agreed on the need to adopt an economic recovery plan as soon as possible, that rises to the circumstances of this unprecedented crisis and shows the strength of European solidarity. To achieve this, it is necessary to maintain coherence with the EU’s priorities, particularly in the fight against climate change, the EU’s digital strategy, social cohesion and economic convergence. They observed the need and urgency to establish a Recovery Fund aimed at those parts of Europe that have been hardest hit by the health crisis, and at those economic sectors most affected, such as tourism.

Spain, Germany, France and Italy also agreed to maintain close cooperation in the exit strategy, which is particularly important given the imminent start of the tourism season.

It is also equally important to take away lessons from the current crisis with the aim of promoting greater strategic autonomy of the European Union and its capacity to response to any future crises.

“This meeting shows Spain’s interest in forging consensus and actively and constructively promoting a European response to the crisis that is both supportive and ambitious” remarked Juan González-Barba. The four State secretaries undertook to maintain their coordination to this end.
