Meeting between Acting Minister for Defence, in charge of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
The Acting Minister for Defence, in charge of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Margarita Robles, held a meeting on Tuesday, 10 December, with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, who is in Madrid attending the COP25.

During the meeting, the acting minister and the High Commissioner had the chance to exchange perspectives on new issues on the human rights agenda, such as the impact of climate change and new digital technologies on the enjoyment of human rights, and the need to strengthen the preventive aspect of international mechanisms to promote and protect human rights, which should be capable of acting before such rights are violated.

The so-called Women, Peace and Security Agenda was also the subject of discussion, which is one of Spain’s priorities on two fronts: in the fight against sexual violence in conflicts and in the promotion of the participation of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts and in building lasting peace. The acting minister informed the High Commissioner of the launch of the “Commitment 2025” initiative by Spain and Finland in September, which contains specific commitments for ensuring the effective participation of women in peace processes by the year 2025. Margarita Robles also conveyed to the High Commissioner the importance Spain attributes to the Human Rights Council addressing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

Acting Minister Robles and High Commissioner Bachelet exchanged information and shared their assessments on the situation in several countries, including Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia.

Lastly, the acting minister took the opportunity of the meeting to reiterate to the High Commissioner Spain’s support for her office and willingness to collaborate.

During the meeting, the State Secretary for Global Spain, Irene Lozano, who was also present, underlined that in recent decades Spain has become a benchmark on the international stage in the expansion of human rights, particularly in such fields as equality, sexual diversity and tolerance. Among other indices that demonstrate this leadership are the Pew Research Center, which place us among the top 10 countries in the world with the greatest religious tolerance and acceptance of sexual diversity; and Georgetown University, which considers us to be one of the best countries to be a woman, thanks to the social, legal and security levels that our country has achieved.
