State Visit to the Republic of Korea

Their Majesties the King and Queen made a state visit to Korea on 23 and 24 October 2019. Both parties looked forward this trip as the last visit of the Spanish Head of State to Seoul took place 23 years ago, in 1996.

This state visit, in which the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation accompanied Their Majesties the King and Queen, allowed them to resume high-level contacts in order to foster the excellent bilateral relations with the Republic of Korea. Bilateral meetings have been held between His Majesty the King and President Moon Jae-in, as well as between the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, and his South Korean counterpart, the Foreign Minister of Korea, Kang Kyung-wha This trip represents a symbolic start to the celebrations on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Spain and the Republic of Korea, which shall take place in 2020.

His Majesty the King also met the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, with whom he discussed multilateralism and several current international issues, specially adressing the environment. The visit included a floral offering at the National Cemetery, a meeting with the President of the National Assembly accompanied by Korean political leaders and an event at the City Hall of the South Korean capital where Their Majesties the King and Queen were proclaimed "honorary citizens" of the city of Seoul.

This State Visit was very useful in the support of Hispanic-Korean business relations. In this regard, His Majesty the King attended a Spain-Korea Business Meeting and a working meeting with relevant leaders of the main South Korean industrial holdings, in which he was accompanied by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, by the Acting Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism and by the President of the CEOE and the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Spain. The state visit continued with a visit to the LG Sciencepark technology centre.

Their Majesties the King and Queen held a meeting with the Korean Association of Hispanists and, finally, the State Visit finished with a meeting with a very broad representation of the Spanish community in the Republic of Korea, which allowed Their Majesties the King and Queen to observe the impressions of Spanish civil society on the reality of this country.

During the trip, two Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) were signed: one between ICEX and Korean Trade Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and another for tourism cooperation, which shall strengthen the commercial relationship, as well as the mutual flows of tourism.
