The SEAEX Holds Consultations with his Algerian Counterpart

The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs (SEAEX), Fernando Valenzuela, has held political consultations with his Algerian counterpart, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Rachid Bladehane.

This visit is framed within the context of the regular contacts that Spain maintains with Algeria, a strategic partner to which we are bound by close ties of cooperation and friendship and whose stability is essential for the region. The last consultations at this level were held in November 2017.

The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and the Secretary General have welcomed the state of the bilateral relations, have revised the electoral calendar of both countries, and have monitored the commitments agreed in the 7th High-Level Meeting, held in Algiers in April 2018.

They have highlighted the excellent level of cooperation in security and defence matters, particularly regarding the control of migration flows.

From an economic point of view, Spain has a great interest in Algeria, where it is the third customer and third supplier. Over 550 Algerian companies have Spanish participation through different models, such as joint-ventures or transfer of production capacities. Relations with regard to the energy field are excellent, particularly in the gas sector. Spanish companies are confident that they will be able to diversify their presence in different sectors, such as the agriculture or the water areas.

Regional issues have also been addressed, since the Maghreb is a priority region for Spanish foreign policy in terms of stability, security and prosperity. Spain particularly values Algeria's responsible role in the area of regional security.

During this trip, the SEAEX was also received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sabri Boukadoum. The agenda was completed with a breakfast with representatives of civil society.
