Spain participates in high level week at the United Nations
Meeting Between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe
26/09/2019

The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, held a meeting with the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić, who took office on 18 September.

Minister Borrell used this meeting to congratulate Pejčinović for her election as Secretary General of the Council of Europe last June and her recent inauguration. The minister stressed that Spain has been a member of the organisation for more than forty years and its permanent involvement therein is a sign of Spain's solid support and commitment to the European human rights system, democracy and the framework Council of Europe.

Several issues were addressed, such as the relations of the Council of Europe with the European Union and the increased cooperation of Spain with this body, including the greater presence of Spaniards therein.

The Minister and the Secretary General also shared views on the need to protect European democracies against threats posed by the rise of populism and exclusive nationalisms.

The Council of Europe is an international organisation the main objective of which is the defence, protection and promotion of human rights (in particular, civil and political rights), democracy and the rule of law. Created on 5 May 1949, it is the oldest institution of this kind in our continent and encompasses the 47 European nations.
