PRESS RELEASE 126
Meeting Between the Acting Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Councillor of China, Wang Yi
25/09/2019

The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, and his Chinese counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Councillor, Wang Yi, held a working meeting in New York yesterday, in which they addressed issues of common interest of the international agenda.

The meeting takes place ten months after the State Visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Spain, in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the commencement of diplomatic relations. On this occasion, updating the Strategic Association signed between both countries in 2005 was agreed, adapting it to the new times. This meeting also takes place five months after the assistance of the minister to the 2nd Forum of the Silk Road held in Beijing last April, who attended as a special representative of the President of the Government. As on the previous occasions, this meeting is once again proof of the good relations between Spain and China.

Both Ministers had an exchange of views on Human Rights issues, as well as regarding the evolution of the situation in Hong Kong, within the framework of the commitment to the principle "one country, two systems" and the desire of both for a peaceful solution to this crisis.

During the meeting, Spain and China revealed that a common concern for global issues of relevance is shared, such as the fight against climate change. Both countries also coincide in their determined support for multilateralism.

Both ministers agreed to highlight the need to prevent trade wars.

On a purely bilateral level, both ministers pledged to strengthen links between Spain and China by opening a new Consulate General of Spain in China (which would add up to 5 in that country) in the city of Chengdu.
