PRESS RELEASE 108
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Attends the Inauguration of the New President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania
01/08/2019

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, today presided the Spanish delegation that attended the inauguration of the new president of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Gazhouani, chosen in the elections of 22 June.

During his meeting with the new president, the minister expressed the importance to Spain of its relationship with Mauritania, an ally and a key partner in the strategic region of the Magreb, to which we have solid human, cultural and historical links and which constitutes an anchor of stability in the region. He also expressed his support for the people of Mauritania in this new phase of democratic consolidation.

The Minister spoke of how Mauritania has been, and will continue to be, a priority country for Spanish Cooperation for Development, and highlighted the willingness of the Spanish private sector to increase its presence in the country and contribute to its development. He also expressed his appreciation for the exemplary cooperation between the two countries in migration and security.

After the ceremony, Minister Borrell travelled to the port of Nuadibú, where he visited the Spanish Security Forces, which have been deployed there for over a decade. The work of the Spanish migratory control team, comprised of the mixed maritime patrols of the Guardia Civil and the joint investigation team of the National Police has allowed for the drastic reduction of irregular migratory flows towards the coasts of the Canary Islands.
