41st session of the Human Rights Council concludes

The 41st session of the Human Rights Council, in which Spain participated as a member of the Council for the period 2018-2020, concluded today in Geneva.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Fernando Valenzuela, intervened on June 25 in the General Debate under item 2 of the agenda, which was attended by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs. Bachelet. During his speech, the Secretary of State underlined Spain's support for the work of the Office of the High Commissioner, the importance of its independence, impartiality and integrity, as well as our rejection of any attempt to manipulate or instrumentalise the work of the Office.

This session of the Council has given priority to women's rights. Spain participated in the discussion on violence against women in the workplace and on women and climate change, as well as in the dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women. Spain has supported resolutions on violence against women and girls in the workplace, presented by Canada, the fight against discrimination against women and girls, presented by Mexico and Colombia, the new initiative on equal pay, presented by Iceland, or the declaration on the 40th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

Spain has also presented, jointly with Jordan, a declaration on the role of women in peace and multilateralism, underlining the relationship between Women, Peace and Security and CEDAW. This declaration has been signed by more than 60 countries.

Spain has also supported the resolution to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Spain has also participated in debates and negotiations on various issues, such as the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and association; youth and human rights; the fight against child marriage; the impact of corruption on the enjoyment of human rights; and human rights and new technologies.

At this 41st session, the European Union has presented an initiative concerning Belarus, which has been adopted. The Council has also examined the human rights situations in Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Myanmar, Burundi and Sudan, and had adopted resolutions on the human rights situation in the Philippines, Syria, Belarus and Eritrea. Spain had participated, inter alia, in the dialogue with the High Commissioner on Venezuela, following the publication of her report, and on the situation in Nicaragua. It has also signed, together with other States of the European Union, a Declaration on Venezuela.
