PRESS RELEASE 104
Presentation of the #SafeTrip information campaign
05/07/2019

The Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Ms. Ángeles Moreno Bau, has presented the #SafeTrip (#ViajaSeguro in Spanish) information campaign, aimed at Spanish nationals travelling abroad, in order to raise awareness on the precautions to take before the trip starts, as well as to inform of the consular services they may resort to in case of need. Ms. Pilar González de Frutos, President of the Spanish Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies (UNESPA, as per its Spanish acronym), and Mr. José Luis Rubayo, President of the Mountaineering Federation of Madrid (FMM, as per its Spanish acronym), also spoke at the presentation.

This edition of the #SafeTrip campaign, which is usually launched every year by MAUC, is clearly and decidedly focused on the digital and audio-visual aspects, which in the future will become the main diplomacy and communication channels for the Ministry.

The #SafeTrip campaign is composed by thirteen short, straightforward and clear audio-visual pieces which are to be broadcast through the social media profiles of the Ministry and of its Embassy and Consulate networks, with the goal of raising awareness with regard to the convenience of adopting a series of measures among the 19 million persons who travel abroad from Spain every year and to the 2.7 million Spanish nationals who reside abroad and travel during their holidays:

1- Register with the MAEUEC Traveller Register. One of the key elements of this campaign is the launching of a Traveller Register app, which is already available in the iOS and Android platforms. For more information on this app, please go to https://registroviajeros.exteriores.gob.es. This app allows Spanish nationals to register as travellers, including their personal and trip information, and to have a direct, user-friendly access to the Ministry’s Travelling Recommendations and to any potential emergency alerts. This app has been developed and promoted by the Ministry in an effort to improve consular service and support, and to make such services more simple, accessible and user-friendly.

2- Take out travel insurance as broad and complete as possible, in order to cover for any potential incidents, such as health issues, accidents, legal assistance, cancellation, theft or loss of luggage, etc.

3- Read carefully the Travel Recommendations published and periodically updated by the Ministry, as well as basic information on the relevant requirements regarding passports, visas and other documents, including their validity and renewal requirements; be aware of the laws of the country of destination and be very aware of the increased risk that certain activities, such as drug use, certain sexual practices, extreme sports or driving, may entail in foreign countries.

In addition to this information campaign, the MAUC works all year long with different instruments in order to avoid and minimise potential risks. On its website (www.exteriores.gob.es) consular information of interest for Spanish communities living abroad or who are temporarily outside Spain may be found, especially through the Travel Recommendations section. The Ministry is also present in social networks, with two Twitter accounts (one in Spanish, @MAECgob and another one in English, @SpainMFA), on Facebook (@exteriores.maec), Instagram (@exteriores.maec), and Youtube (canalmaectv). Besides, virtually all Representations and most Consulates have social media profiles on which they regularly post any relevant consular information.

This information work is completed by the "Spain with you" service; this service sends an SMS to the mobile phone when travelling abroad, stating the number of the emergency phone number of the consular office that is nearest to the town of arrival. This service is provided in collaboration with Telefónica and Orange.
