PRESS RELEASE101
Meeting Between the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation and the Secretary-General of NATO
27/06/2019

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, travelled to Brussels and held a bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, during which both addressed different issues regarding security and defence of the international agenda.

They analysed the different scenarios occurring after the announcement of the withdrawal of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) by the United States, which was followed by a similar announcement by Russia.

They also addressed the situation in Afghanistan, where they found that, although the security situation is worrying, NATO remains committed to creating conditions for peace, training the Afghan Security Forces.

Both also talked about the NATO's interaction with the territory of Kosovo. Minister Josep Borrell communicated to the Secretary General of NATO that he believes that Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue will finally reach a mutually acceptable solution in this regard.

Finally, they highlighted the validity of the transatlantic link.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Treaty of Washington, which founded the Atlantic Alliance, an international organisation that today has 29 member countries and is close to welcoming the 30th ally, the Republic of North Macedonia.

Since it became member the Alliance in 1982, Spain has been one of the Member States that has shown the greatest solidarity among allies. Spain has made great efforts to ensure that NATO is able to face to all the challenges that threaten the security of the citizens by means of its presence in virtually all of NATO's operations, which is appreciated by our Atlantic partners.
