PRESS RELEASE 098
Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs holds bilateral consultations with his Tunisian counterpart
21/06/2019

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Fernando Valenzuela, and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Tunisia, Sabri Bachtobji, held political consultations, in which they reviewed the implementation of the commitments agreed at the 8th High Level Meeting, held in February 2018.

For Spain, Tunisia is a neighbouring and friendly country that has made significant efforts to consolidate its democratic model, a process that Spain has supported from the outset.

Spain has expressed its will to consolidate itself as a reference economic partner in Tunisia, with a greater presence of our companies, pioneers in sectors such as renewable energies, tourism and the agri-food sector. In this sense, in February 2019 the Official Credit Institute (ICO) signed with Tunisia a credit line of 25 million euros from the Fund for the Internationalization of Enterprise (FIEM), aimed at SMEs willing to invest in Tunisia.

Among others, Spain is working to implement the EU delegated cooperation programme in the field of Youth, Culture and Sport (EU4Youth), for an amount of 15 million euros.

The relations between the two countries have also been approached from a regional perspective, with the Maghreb being a priority region for Spain's foreign policy in terms of stability, security and prosperity.

During the trip, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs was also received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Khemaies Jhinaoui. The agenda was completed with the presentation of the publication "Spain and Tunisia, a Mediterranean relationship for the future" at a public event held at the Centre for Mediterranean and International Studies (CEMI), and with the participation of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs at the ceremony for the awarding of the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit to his counterpart.
