PRESS RELEASE 80
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Visits Lebanon (3 and 4 May)
04/05/2019

During his visit to Lebanon on 3 and 4 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, was received by the country’s leaders; President Michel Aoun, Speaker of the Parliament, Nabih Berri and the Prime Minister, Saad Hariri. He also attended a working lunch with his counterpart, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Gebran Basil.

At these meetings, the minister’s interlocutors explained the challenges facing the new government formed in January, such as reforms in the economy and energy policy which must be implemented once the budget, currently under negotiation, is approved. They also highlighted the economic and social impact of generously receiving over one million Syrian refugees.

Minister Borrell spoke of Spain's commitment to accompanying Lebanon in this stage and that Spain had announced a contribution of over 84 million euros at the third Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria in March. He also spoke of how Spanish is the main language of the Lebanese diaspora and underlined the desire to develop Hispano-Lebanese cultural ties. Both parties spoke of their desire to see more Spanish companies contribute to the economic development of Lebanon.

They also looked at the situation in the region, including the Syrian and Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Lebanese leaders stated their appreciation for Spain’s constant commitment to the security of Lebanon since 2006 with the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) mission deployed in the south of the country. The Minister also visited the Miguel de Cervantes base in Marjayoun. There he thanked over 600 members of the military and the Spanish Guardia Civil for their efforts in maintaining peace and in training the Lebanese Armed Forces, in compliance with the United Nations resolutions.
