PRESS RELEASE 079
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Visits Jordan (1 and 2 May)
02/05/2019

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, made a visit to Jordan on 1 and 2 May to hold talks with his counterpart, the Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi, within the framework of the memorandum signed on his visit to Madrid in July 2018.

Minister Safadi explained his government's programme of economic reforms. Minister Borrell confirmed Spain’s willingness to collaborate in key sectors such as renewable energies, tourism and water management, as well as the possibilities offered by the financial assistance of 100 million euros signed off at the first Mixed Economic Committee held in January.

Minister Borrell highlighted the commitment of Spanish cooperation to Jordan in terms of both governance and refugees.

Jordan is the country that hosts the highest number of refugees per capita, in particular Palestinians (1.2 million) and Syrians.

Minister Borrell pointed to the Spanish government’s decision to make an extraordinary contribution of 12.5 million euros to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), not to mention the contributions of the Autonomous Communities and Local Authorities, and the fact that Spain announced a contribution of over 84 million euros at the third Brussels Conference on Supporting the future of Syria.

Both Ministers covered the issue of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process, reiterating their firm commitment to a two-state solution as the only way of reaching a fair and lasting peace in the region.

Minister Borrell also signed a memorandum of cooperation on water with Minister Raed Abu Soud.

During his visit, Minister Borrell visited a UNRWA clinic at the Palestine refugee camp of Talibeh, and the largest Syrian refugee camp in Zaatari where there are more than 80,000 people. To date, Spain has taken in 389 Syrian refugees from Jordan.
