PRESS RELEASE 071
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Participates in the Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers
04/04/2019

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, Josep Borrell, has travelled to Washington to participate in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Foreign Ministers Meeting, which also marked the 70th anniversary of the organization and saw analysis of the main security and defence issues on the international agenda.

Over three working sessions the allied Ministers discussed relations with Russia, the fight against terrorism and strategic security. They also held a working lunch to discuss transatlantic relations and burden sharing.

Firstly, at the meeting on Russia, the Ministers analysed the different possibilities after the report to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, cyber-defence risks and hybrid warfare. They also addressed the situation in the Black Sea region and agreed on additional support measures for Georgia and Ukraine, which are also member countries.

At the second working session, focusing on the fight against terrorism and the development of strategic security, the Ministers addressed the possible ways in which NATO might contribute to the fight against terrorism. They analysed the situation in Afghanistan and expressed their will to work together with the Afghan authorities. During this session they also addressed other strategic issues, such as the increasing importance of China in the international community.

Finally, during the third session, the allied Ministers underlined the importance of the transatlantic link and assessed burden sharing as a follow-up to the meetings held by the Foreign Ministers in December 2018 and by Ministers of Defence last February.

In this Ministerial Meeting a declaration emphasising the achievements of the Alliance on its 70th anniversary was approved and the unity of the member countries in tackling future challenges was evidenced.

Since joining NATO, Spain has been one of the Member States most committed to allied solidarity, undertaking significant efforts to ensure that the NATO is capable of responding to all the challenges that threaten the security of its citizens. Our participation in NATO operations is valued by our partners.

Spain, in its dual role as a member of the Alliance and a member of the European Union, has demonstrated its commitment to the security of Europe in order to tackle the threats and challenges it faces and to strengthen transatlantic solidarity and links.
