PRESS RELEASE 049
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Travels to Ethiopia
07/03/2019

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Josep Borrell, is visiting Ethiopia from 7 to 9 March. During his stay in this country, he held a meeting with the Ethiopian authorities, notably with the President of the Republic, Sahle-Work Zewde, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Workneh Gebeyehu, and with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Vera Songwe.

The political leadership of Ethiopia, together with its demographic and economic potential, its transforming potential on the continent and its ability to export security and stability, has made it become one of the three “Anchor Nations”, along with Nigeria and South Africa, in the new Africa Plan, approved last Friday by the Council of Ministers. Minister Borrell had the opportunity to explain the new strategic approaches of the Plan to his Ethiopian counterparts, as well as to analyse the important role that the country will play in its application.

In addition, in line with the Plan itself, the Minister confirmed the great opportunities that Ethiopia offers to Spanish companies, and expressed to the authorities the willingness that these companies have to establish themselves there. In this regard, the Minister will also visit the Ethiopian Investment Commission to personally meet the authorities in charge of attracting foreign investment.

On the other hand, Minister Borrell informed the Chairperson of the African Union Commission of Spain's will to strengthen ties with the organisation, which is a strategic partner for Spain both in political terms (it will have a very important role in the implementation of the new Africa Plan) and in terms of development cooperation (Spanish Cooperation contributes 30 million euros to the organisation’s budget). For the purposes of raising the level and frequency of bilateral contacts, in order to more frequently address issues of common interest, the Minister proposed the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding for political dialogue.

Finally, the Minister will meet with the Executive Secretary of UNECA to study the most effective ways for Spain to contribute to the growth and prosperity of the continent in collaboration with the United Nations.
