PRESS RELEASE 020
Meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation and representatives of Amnesty International
07/02/2019

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation held a meeting yesterday, 6 February, with Esteban Beltrán, Director of International Amnesty in Spain, and María del Pozo, responsible for Institutional Relations and Foreign Policy of such body.

During this meeting, the latest events in Venezuela and their impact on the human rights situation were studied.

Amnesty International provided recent details on the humanitarian crisis suffered by Venezuelans in the interior of the country, as well as those displaced to border areas. The worrying situation of human rights in Nicaragua was also addressed.

These representatives of Amnesty International gave a list including more than one hundred people arrested in different countries to Minister Josep Borrell. This list includes, among others, human rights defenders, political activists or women who are arrested in subhuman conditions and usually without a fair trial. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation shall instruct Embassies and Consulates of Spain to be interested in these cases.

Amnesty International shared its concern about the export of weapons manufactured in Spain to conflict areas such as Yemen. The Minister reported that the Government, referring to several President’s statements in parliament, attaches special importance to this issue.

Amnesty International showed interest in the Proposal of Organic Law on universal justice. Minister Josep Borrell explained that the purpose of Spain for decades is that crimes against humanity must be tried in the International Criminal Court, which Spain strongly supports. This court has just turned 20 years of existence, a circumstance that was commemorated during the recent visit to Madrid of its President, Mr Chile Eboe-Osuji.
