PRESS RELEASE 13
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation, together with the President of the ICC, put an end to the events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Rome Statute
25/01/2019

At the Spanish Diplomatic School, Minister Josep Borrell, together with the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Nigerian judge Chile Eboe-Osuji, has brought to a close today the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Rome Statute, which is the constituent instrument of the ICC.

Within the framework of these events, the Diplomatic School and the Spanish Association of Professors of International Law and International Relations have organised an academic seminar entitled "The International Criminal Court 20 years later: integrity of the Statute and universality", that has allowed addressing different topics related to the ICC and which will result in a publication in which the progress and conclusions reached during the colloquium will be reflected.

In his closing remarks, Minister Josep Borrell highlighted that Spain is a strong supporter of the ICC and its work in the fight against impunity at the global level, this Court being the body that can most effectively realize the aspiration for universal justice. He also stressed Spain's willingness to deepen its cooperation with the ICC by incorporating into our legal system the legal instruments that make this possible.

The visit to Spain by the President of the ICC follows an invitation made by Minister Josep Borrell on the occasion of his visit to this institution last October, and marks the culmination of a period in which Spain has broadly supported the work of the Court in the face of attacks against its legitimacy precisely 20 years after the adoption of the Rome Statute.

On the occasion of his visit to Spain, the President of the ICC also had the opportunity to meet with the Minister of Justice, Dolores Delgado, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and the General Council of the Judiciary.

The ICC, based in The Hague, was created at the initiative of the UN on 17 July 1998 through the Rome Statute and began its functions on 1 July 2002. It is the first permanent international tribunal responsible for trying those responsible for crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes and, following the Review Conference of the Rome Statute held in Kampala in 2010, the Court also rules on crimes of aggression in the case of those countries that have ratified the review, such as Spain.

At present, 123 countries have ratified the Rome Statute (Spain did so on 24 October 2000).
